Top brand ic! berlin launches plotic series 3D printing glasses

3D printing has been making waves in the fashion accessory industry for some time, but when it comes to 3D printed eyewear, there have been very few market-ready products that gained widespread acceptance. However, this might be about to change. Earlier this year, the renowned German eyewear brand ic! berlin introduced a new line of 3D printed glasses called "plotic," signaling a potential shift in the industry.
As one of the top names in the eyewear world, ic! berlin has long been known for its high-quality frames made from steel and acetate. Their reputation is well-established, and their decision to use selective laser sintering (SLS), a type of 3D printing technology, to create sunglasses makes perfect sense. In fact, they’ve reportedly been experimenting with this method for several years now.
The plotic series includes two fully 3D printed models and two hybrid versions that combine 3D printed materials with metal. These glasses feature a unique half-ring design and are available in eight different colors, offering a fresh take on traditional eyewear aesthetics.
According to Julius Iversen, the chief designer at ic! berlin, the glasses are made using polyamide PA220, a material known for being hypoallergenic and certified safe for contact with water and food. It also has a molecular structure similar to natural silk, making it ideal for eyewear. “PA220 is strong, lightweight—30% lighter than acetate—and allows for various post-treatment processes like polishing, dyeing, and metallization,†he explained.
Iversen believes that 3D printing opens up entirely new possibilities in eyewear design. “With plotic, we can create any shape without being limited by traditional manufacturing methods. For example, our plotic-metal hybrid structure would have been impossible to achieve through conventional techniques. Now, all we need is a digital file,†he said. He also highlighted how 3D printing enables features like integrated silicone nose pads, which are not feasible with traditional materials, improving comfort and ensuring a better fit for every wearer.
At the Opti 2015 optical exhibition in Munich, the plotic series made its debut, showcasing the brand’s commitment to innovation. Through their official announcement, ic! berlin expressed excitement about the future of 3D printing in their work. “The future of plotic is open, and we’re just getting started,†they said, hinting at more groundbreaking designs to come.
This move by ic! berlin not only highlights the growing potential of 3D printing in the fashion and eyewear industries but also sets a new standard for what’s possible in terms of both function and style.
