The key to keeping fruits and vegetables fresh lies in minimizing water loss, slowing down biological respiration, preventing bacterial growth, and removing ethylene gas, which accelerates aging and ripening. To achieve this, preserving corrugated cardboard is designed with multiple strategies that address these factors.
1. **Laminated Type**
A plastic film infused with antibacterial and freshness-preserving agents is applied to the corrugated cardboard. Additionally, a CTM freshness agent is coated on the inner surface. This agent contains plant hormones like absinthe and its derivatives, oxalone and its derivatives (such as cypressol), as well as terpene ethers. These components help reduce moisture evaporation, maintain product freshness, and regulate temperature inside the box, ensuring better preservation of perishable goods.
2. **Composite Type**
An aluminized cling film is laminated on the inner side of the corrugated cardboard. This composite material is capable of absorbing ethylene gas, which helps delay ripening. The aluminized layer also prevents moisture loss and reflects radiant heat, helping to keep the internal temperature stable and extending the shelf life of the contents.
3. **Foam Type**
This type combines foam with corrugated cardboard, offering superior freshness preservation compared to regular or plastic-laminated corrugated boards. It has several advantages:
- Its moisture permeability is only 1/20 of that of standard corrugated cardboard, reducing the risk of dehydration and shriveling in fruits and vegetables.
- With fewer heat conduction paths and better thermal resistance, it prevents sudden temperature changes inside the box.
- Due to low air permeability, it can help adjust the internal atmosphere. When used for packaging cauliflower, the oxygen levels in foam-type boxes gradually decrease while COâ‚‚ levels rise, which slows down respiration and inhibits microbial growth. Although some cauliflower may experience reduced flowering due to low oxygen, it remains free from pests and diseases. In contrast, cauliflower stored in ordinary boxes tends to yellow and deteriorate quickly.
4. **Hybrid Type**
During the production of the inner paper of corrugated cardboard, porous ethylene-absorbing powder is added to prevent premature ripening. Additionally, special ceramic powders that emit infrared light at wavelengths between 6 µm and 41 µm can be applied. These powders emit infrared radiation at normal temperatures, activating molecular processes in fruits and enhancing their resistance to microbial damage. They also stimulate enzymes that improve fruit sweetness, making this type ideal for packaging fruits such as peaches, grapes, and bayberries.
