David Charette finds immense joy in the creative process. He thrives on working with top professionals and being part of a dynamic team. One of the most challenging yet exciting phases of his career was when he was sent to Beirut to work on the Princess Noura University project in the Middle East. The fast-paced environment required long hours and constant coordination across different time zones.

Exclusive Interview With Britto Charette

"I was working with people in the San Francisco office, but I was in Beirut, so I had the challenge of trying to coordinate meetings that were 10 hours apart. We worked six days a week, ten hours a day, which made it challenging to stay motivated." – David Charette

During the recession, David faced tough times, both professionally and personally. It was hard to stay positive amidst unprofessional behavior and being far from family. However, staying connected with a core group of trusted colleagues and using travel as an escape helped him keep going. He also believes in continuous learning, always exploring new software, reading, and traveling to inspire his designs.

David feels inspired when his past ideas come to life or when his predictions become reality. He constantly pushes boundaries. Jay Britto, his partner, values Instagram as a powerful tool to connect with their audience and attract new clients. The platform allows them to showcase their best work and maintain a strong presence in the design community.

David believes that while technology has made design more accessible, it has also led to some generic trends. However, this has sparked a demand for bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story. This is where Britto Charette shines, creating unique projects like custom plaster headboards that stand out in any space.

The studio is currently working on new iterations of their WASI home accessories. Collaborating with GLS Stone Group, the KINSA collection has been reimagined in stone and crafted by skilled artisans in Venice. They are also working with Kyle Bunting on a rug collaboration and with ArtSpaceNYC for a unique headboard element for the Ritz-Carlton in Miami Beach.

"What’s clear to us is that teaming up with the very best people is critical. We can have the best ideas, but we need to collaborate with the best minds—the best means and methods—we need their area of expertise. I can design, but I don’t know how to blow glass. Collaboration and finding the best craftspeople is just a smart way to work and to deliver the best products to our clients." – David Charette

Looking ahead, David and Jay believe that architects and designers will play a bigger role in addressing social issues. While they can't solve everything alone, they aim to raise awareness about important topics such as water conservation. By incorporating sustainable practices into their designs, they help clients make informed decisions that benefit both people and the planet.
