Dom-A: An Incredible Russian Design Studio
Maria Silver and Sergey Makushev are the creative minds behind Dom-A, a renowned Russian design studio that has been making waves in the world of interior design. Known for their innovative approach, they blend modern aesthetics with timeless elegance, creating spaces that feel both luxurious and grounded. From luxurious penthouses to cozy cottages and elegant hotels, Dom-A's work spans a wide range of architectural and interior design projects, earning them a top spot among Russian design studios.
Over the years, Dom-A has grown significantly, expanding its portfolio and reputation. For Maria Silver, this growth has come with challenges, including increased workload, organizational changes, and important decisions. Yet, she believes these challenges have helped the studio evolve, raising the bar for professionalism and design quality.
“I think when a person becomes satisfied with everything that he has achieved, he stops growing. Until we are satisfied, we have something to strive for, and I want this state of ‘satisfaction’ to come to me as late as possible.â€
When asked about professional fulfillment, Maria emphasized that it comes from completing a project that feels complete in terms of logic, quality, and client satisfaction. She values the idea that her designs should be understandable and meaningful even to those who aren’t professionals. “Everything we do is for people,†she says.
At Dom-A, the relationship between the team and clients is always based on dialogue. If cooperation starts as a conversation, the project is more likely to succeed. But if it’s one-sided, like a monologue from the architect, it can lead to an ego-driven outcome. That’s why mutual understanding and communication are at the core of their process.
This philosophy applies to all projects, whether private or corporate. The studio is also planning to launch a new furniture collection that reflects their signature style. Maria, known for her versatility, enjoys working across multiple areas, finding that switching tasks keeps her motivated and engaged.
“I have many areas of activity and they are diverse because if I immerse myself in one thing, after a while I get bored. I can quickly switch to different tasks, being multi-tasking is a natural state for me.â€
Through attending exhibitions and staying connected with global design trends, Maria has learned that inspiration often strikes unexpectedly. In the early days of Dom-A, there wasn’t a specific source of inspiration—rather, it was a natural process that evolved over time.
The design world is moving toward simplicity, with clean lines and eco-friendly materials becoming increasingly popular. While luxury design used to be exclusive, it's now more accessible due to advancements in manufacturing. Maria sees this shift as a positive trend, believing that the era of luxury for a few may soon end.
However, Maria emphasizes that simplicity doesn't mean sacrificing craftsmanship. Drawing from her experience in Italy, especially with Arte Veneziana, she believes that traditional skills must remain central to design. Machines will play a bigger role in connecting artisans, designers, and clients, but the human touch is irreplaceable.
