Bio-based fiber carries the responsibility of chemical fiber

In the future of bio-based fibers, industry experts emphasize the need for the market to play a fundamental role in optimizing resource allocation, allowing enterprises to become the core drivers of technological innovation and industrialization. Moreover, strengthening collaboration among production, education, and research is crucial. Enterprises and universities must build strong alliances and create effective platforms for exchange and cooperation to foster the development of bio-based fiber technologies. Recently, the 8th China Bio-industry Conference was held at the Tianjin Binhai International Convention and Exhibition Center. As a sub-forum, the "Strategic Emerging Industries and Bio-based Fiber Materials" summit attracted significant attention from domestic and international participants. Discussions highlighted the nation's commitment to developing the bio-industry, with bio-based fibers seen as a key area for growth and expansion. Since the 1990s, due to dwindling petroleum resources and growing environmental concerns, traditional chemical fiber-producing countries like the U.S., EU, and Japan have gradually shifted away from conventional chemical fiber production. Instead, they have redefined their fiber materials, focusing on high-performance chemical fibers and bio-based alternatives that are more sustainable and profitable. Following the financial crisis, developed nations began viewing the bio-industry as a national strategy to stimulate economic recovery and gain a competitive edge in high-tech sectors. At the 2011 World Bioplastics Conference in New York, examples of rapid advancements in bio-PX/PTA and 100% bio-polyester technology were showcased, drawing widespread industry interest. Major global chemical companies such as DuPont, Dow, DSM, and BASF have transitioned from traditional chemical fiber production to focus on bio-based materials, considering them a top priority for future growth. The commercialization of the bio-routed PX/PTA/PET industry chain is expected between 2015 and 2016, with predictions suggesting that 100% bio-based PET will become widely available in the near future. Looking at the domestic market, over 90% of China’s chemical fiber products still rely on petroleum-based raw materials, with input costs accounting for more than 80% of total production expenses. Approximately two-thirds of the demand for chemical fiber raw materials is met through imports, leading to high external dependence and potential risks for the industry. As a country producing 70% of the world’s chemical fibers, China’s industry faces challenges unless it transitions toward bio-based alternatives. According to Wang Wei, deputy director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the development of bio-based chemical fibers aligns with national needs. Duan Xiaoping, president of the China Chemical Fiber Industry Association, believes that promoting bio-based fibers is essential for sustainable growth and carries significant responsibility for the industry. Using bio-based materials to replace petrochemical products has become a necessity for China’s chemical fiber sector. The government has also shown strong support for the bio-based fiber industry through policy initiatives. Both the “Twelfth Five-Year National Strategic Emerging Industry Development Plan” and the “Chemical Fiber Industry Twelfth Five-Year Development Plan” highlight the importance of bio-based chemical fibers. Additionally, multiple ministries and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are working together on a special implementation plan to promote this sector. “We must implement the development plan of bio-based chemical fibers in accordance with national requirements, from the perspective of maintaining national security and cultivating strategic emerging industries,” emphasized Duan Xiaoping. In terms of enterprise R&D, China has made significant progress. Companies like Jiangsu Shenghong Group and Qingdao Kangtong Marine Fiber Co., Ltd. have achieved breakthroughs in bio-based fiber production, including PDO, PTT, and seaweed fibers. These firms have established comprehensive industrial chains and are leading the way in innovation. Meanwhile, Guangdong Lily Medical Technology and Hess Moore Biotechnology have developed advanced bio-based fibers with applications in medical and aerospace fields. Bio-based fibers are gaining traction across various sectors. Chitosan fiber, for instance, is used in aerospace, healthcare, and military applications, while PLA fiber is finding its place in eco-friendly textiles and feminine hygiene products. Seaweed fiber is also being explored for flame-retardant clothing and medical textiles. Looking ahead, the industry aims to avoid traditional development paths and instead embrace new, innovative strategies. With the goal of reaching 5.1 million tons of bio-based chemical fiber production by 2015, the sector is poised for significant growth. However, sustained investment, intellectual property protection, and government support remain critical for long-term success. As Liu Xiucai of Shanghai Kaisai Bio-Industry noted, enterprises require consistent funding and protection against imitation to thrive. Heis Moore, with over 120 patents, underscores the importance of safeguarding innovations. In conclusion, the future of bio-based fibers lies in market-driven innovation, academic-industry collaboration, and continued policy support.
