MO 2019: Design and Craftsmanship Come Together In The Talks
Design and craftsmanship are deeply intertwined, and in 2019, at Maison et Objet, you had the chance to explore how and why. Join us for an inspiring journey through the vibrant world of Portuguese arts and crafts, all taking place during the highly anticipated The Talks on January 21st. The event was titled "Portugal – Eldorado Archi, Design and Craft?", hosted by journalist Guy-Claude Agboton. The panel featured renowned speakers such as Joana Astolfi, Jacques Bec, Artur Miranda, and Amândio Pereira—each bringing their unique perspective and passion for design and tradition.

Joana Astolfi is a multidisciplinary artist, architect, and designer known for her unique visual storytelling. Her work draws from a rich collection of found objects—porcelain figurines, vintage furniture, old photographs, and more—that shape her creative vision. Her pieces have been exhibited globally and collected by design enthusiasts worldwide. Since 2014, she has been the window designer for Hermès in Portugal, and her artistic flair has earned her international recognition.
Oitoemponto was founded in 1993 by two distinct yet complementary personalities—Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec. Miranda brought a modern and bold approach to interior design, breaking traditional rules and experimenting with unexpected combinations. Meanwhile, Bec added a French touch and refined graphic skills from his studies at the Met de Penninghen school in Paris. Together, they created stunning interiors that captured the imagination of many.
Amândio Pereira, founder and CEO of the Covet Group, is a passionate advocate for Portuguese craftsmanship. After studying Product Design at Politecnico di Milano, he quickly gained attention for his innovative furniture and lighting collections. His belief in the power of design to inspire led him to establish the Covet Foundation in 2018—a non-profit dedicated to celebrating and preserving traditional craftsmanship around the world.
Guy-Claude Agboton discovered design through an internship at Marie-Claire Maison. Over the years, he became a leading voice in the design world, writing extensively on everything from vintage furniture to contemporary art and architecture. As the head of the design section at IDEAT magazine, he brings a deep understanding of the human stories behind design and craftsmanship.
